BB4.5-Safe-and-Sustainable by Design
Elias Koumoulos
Description
During the design stage of novel processes, information regarding safety and sustainability can be analysed based on the principles of the Safe-and-Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework and the appropriate guidelines can be provided to the process owners. Early adoption of these principles can help minimize the cost of implementation since the integration of risk mitigation actions becomes less effective in later stages (as demonstrated by the Hierarchy of Controls principle). Combined environmental, economic, social and risk assessment, by using a specialised scoring system with weighting criteria, can provide optimization recommendations at a holistic life-cycle perspective.

Standardisation
Safe-and-Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework issued by the European Commission
Innovation features
IRES: Development of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on the detailed geometry of the workroom and the configuration of air ventilation. The CFD models empowers the comparison of different safety controls and the selection of the design that provides the best results for a specific area in the workroom.
Pricing
8.700€ per service month
EUT: Ranging from 5k€ to 500k€
Service delivery timeframe
2-6 months depending on project complexity
EUT: 1-48 months depending on project complexity
Relevant Industry
Advanced materials & chemicals, building materials, energy & electronics in buildings
Providers
IRES, EUT
Supporting Services
Evaluation and comparison of different workroom ventilation setups can be performed though on-site testing and via computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations.
Proper fitting of tight-fit respirators can be evaluated through quantitative fit testing. Measurements of noise levels, illuminance, and heat stress can also be performed (IRES)
Value proposition
IRES offers Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) services for emerging technologies such as Nearly Zero Emission Buildings (nZEBs), Renewable Energy Systems, Additive Manufacturing, and Composites. This extensive expertise enables us to provide tailored, industry-specific SSbD strategies that address the unique safety and sustainability needs of advanced materials and high-tech construction projects.
Environmental and social impact
SSbD advances the EU’s Safe and Sustainable Chemicals Strategy by integrating sustainability and safety principles at the earliest stages of material innovation. This proactive approach helps industries reduce environmental impact, minimize reliance on critical raw materials, and drive socio-economic growth through responsible and sustainable technological advancements.
